The development of Sydney’s CBD continues to provide the MGP Sydney Water team with interesting site specific challenges. These include dealing with heritage and oversized critical assets that require protection, whilst enabling new developments to be constructed and the CBD to grow.
MGP designed the Sydney Water infrastructure for the development of Pitt Street metro station.
The project involved a detailed major works design, building plan approval over/near heritage assets, tunnelling, deep basement excavations and anchoring.
Site challenges/solutions: Heritage assets surrounding the development needed to be protected from the construction works such as tunnelling, deep basement excavations and anchoring, our building plan approval assessment ensured all the supportive design documentation and correct construction approach was taken to ensure these risks were mitigated.
Additionally, the new Pitt Street Station will require construction work at each underground station entry, with the construction implemented in two (2) stages. MGP managed five (5) Development Applications with Sydney Water to attain the required certificates, approvals and protect the assets at each stage accordingly.
This in depth approval and connection schedule was implemented to ensure a successful delivery of the project.

The Pumphouse Darling Harbour was built in 1891 as a pumping station for the Sydney & Suburban Hydraulic Power Company, as part of Sydney’s power infrastructure, back before electricity provided most of our power needs. When the city switched to modern electric power, the Pumphouse transformed into one of Sydney’s first microbreweries. Today it is a busy bar and restaurant set within the heritage listed building.
MGP were engaged by Dynamic Projects to review the stormwater run-off for the roof and advise on gutter and downpipe sizing, as part of the current renovations to this heritage listed building.

MGP were delighted to be involved with the hydraulic design of the new Ronald McDonald House at Westmead Hospital. This three levelled development provides premium accommodation for families of children undergoing treatment at the hospital. The House provides hotel style facilities; including self catering suites, childcare for siblings, disabled and accessibility facilities, large commercial laundry and kitchen/dining, along with entertainment decks and spaces for families to rest and recuperate.
The site had a number of challenges; existing infrastructure services were heavily over burdened and unable to sustain a new building. MGP found a solution to provide the site with the necessary infrastructure without putting pressure on the existing services, especially that of the hospital. We designed a fire sprinkler tank to accommodate and meet the needs of the new development, along with a full hydraulic design to accommodate trade waste, sanitary drainage, hot and cold water, fire services and Sydney Water approval.
The McDonalds House provides families with a much needed service, supporting the existing hospital services without burdening the current infrastructure.

North Sydney continues its makeover and the Sydney Water team at MGP worked with the project team on the redevelopment of 221 Miller Street. This 14 Storey 54 strata office suite was sold in 2017 and during 2018 transformed into 169 residential units, 100 serviced apartments, parking, conference facilities and a food and beverage retail offering.
The site is situated over a Sydney Water sewer and required a sewer deviation; design and approval, along with amplification of the Water Main in Miller Street to accommodate the expansion and increasing demand on the existing infrastructure.

MGP undertook the hydraulic and civil design services for the addition of two levels of guest rooms in the hotel.
The contemporary design of the two new levels and roof structures meant MGP needed to work with the existing building layout and its constraints, along with council conditions in this dense urban environment.
Within the city are restricted discharge rates and the buildings’ stormwater requires limited flow. The new roof design, that angled into the Atrium, meant MGP needed to find a solution for the stormwater runoff. The solution was an onsite detention tank located beneath the existing pool structure, and adjacent to the Atrium. This enabled run off to be collected, enabled the flow rate to be controlled into the existing council kerb and gutter without causing additional impact to the city’s infrastructure.
