The Sandstone Precinct – Lands Building

The Sandstone Precinct - Lands Building

The Sandstone Precinct - Lands Building

The Lands Department building was built by the NSW colonial government in the late 19th century. It was designed by government architect James Barnet in the Renaissance Revival style popular at the time. It has been continuously occupied by the Lands Department, in its various forms, since being opened in 1892. Its last occupant was the Department of Planning and Infrastructure.

In September 2015 the NSW Government announced that the Lands Department Building, and the Education Department Building (The Sandstone Precinct), will both be redeveloped as a luxury hotel and retail destination.

The project involves the adaptive reuse of the state-significant heritage-listed buildings located on Bridge Street in Sydney.

The MGP Sydney Water team were involved in the earlier stages of the redevelopment, including locating Sydney Water assets and the Out of Scope Building Plan Approval. Our team is currently working with Built and Sydney Water to ensure the proposed development and new basement tunnel are compliant.

Our hydraulic team have recently been engaged to complete the design of the hydraulic and fire services. Working closely with Built, JRK Plumbers and Hassell Architects to ensure we provide effective, sustainable, and efficient design solutions, whilst ensuring the conservation of this heritage building, an iconic Sydney landmark.

Archibald Fountain Hyde Park

Archibald Fountain Hyde Park

Archibald Fountain Hyde Park

The Archibald Fountain in Hyde Park can be found at the intersection of the main avenues crossing the park. The fountain, by French sculptor Francois Sicard, commemorates the association between Australia and France in World War 1. It draws its themes from Greek antiquity and is an important example in Sydney of 1920-30’s Art Deco.

The fountain is approximately 18 metres in diameter and is in the shape of a hexagon. The mythical figures and animals sit amongst the fountain spray and jets creating a stunning water sculpture in Hyde Park.

Corrosion of the existing pipe work, along with old pumps and filters meant that the fountain not only required extensive repair work but also an upgrade to meet safety standards. MGP and Water Features Australia were engaged to complete the work. A new pump, water quality control, pipes and filters were designed by MGP and installed by Water Features Australia.

Macquarie University

Macquarie University

Macquarie University

Macquarie University’s largest and most transformative project, a program worth $500 million commenced this year in May.  As part of the design team, including Architectus, FDC and DW Plumbing, MGP completed the hydraulic services design for the new buildings which serve a variety of functions and deliver modernised social and educational infrastructure at the very heart of the campus. The project included design for the revitalised and replanted Central Courtyard surrounded by one existing, and three new buildings that were designed to be lighter and brighter, creating a new vibrancy and dynamism for all to enjoy. MGP was involved with four key projects on the campus:
  • Lincoln Building
  • Central Courtyard
  • Precinct
  • Student Accommodation
  • Water Feature Design
The historic Lincoln Building, an architectural icon on the campus,  underwent  internal and façade refurbishment. The upper levels accommodate student learning and research spaces, a new home for the Research Office, with the ground floor offering specialty food outlets that open onto the new Central Courtyard. The largest element of the project, the five level Central Courtyard building (1 Central Courtyard) houses a new bar, courtyard, food/retail outlets, commercial kitchen and function facilities along with formal teaching spaces, informal learning areas and a student Auditorium The third part of the precinct project involved two brand new student residential towers with up to 341 beds to be offered in this initial stage.  These towers will also offer end of trip facilities and common break out areas for relaxing. The student accommodation bathrooms will be prefabricated pods, which required MGP to provide a high degree of coordination for slab penetration. The final element of the project is the water feature designed by Goodwin MGP, with pump room mechanics designed by MGP hydraulic team.

Western Sydney University – Bankstown

Western Sydney University - Bankstown

Western Sydney University - Bankstown

The new Bankstown campus forms part of the Western Sydney University growth strategy – an impressive program of works reshaping the University’s campus network, including establishing new vertical campuses within the growth centres of Western Sydney.

Located between Bankstown’s Council administration building, Library and Knowledge Centre, the campus will provide new jobs, educational opportunities and revitalise the heart of Bankstown.

In 2019 the MGP Sydney Water team worked on the design and approval for the relocation of the sewer to enable the development of a new multi level basement and 18 storey vertical campus.  Both our Section 73 and Building Plan Approval team assisted with this essential early works stage.

In 2020 we were engaged to complete the hydraulic design workshop drawings for the campus. A time pressured schedule was undertaken, coordinating with other services to ensure a successful delivery of the project.

The campus is set to open for teaching in early 2022.

UNSW Engineering Innovation Hub

UNSW Engineering Innovation Hub & Western Sydney University

Parramatta continues boosting its place as the second CBD in the greater Sydney metropolitan area with its announcement in February of the new ‘Engineering Innovation Hub’. This joint venture between the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the Western Sydney University (WSU) will offer a world class ‘Engineering Innovation Hub’ on the current site of the Commercial Hotel in the Parramatta CBD.

The development is set to cost $280M and the project will be completed by Charter Hall. Charter Hall built the $220M PSQ1 (Parramatta Square 1) 14 story vertical campus for the Western Sydney University, completing it in 2017 just metres away from the current proposal for this University.

The two universities developed a custom-designed, 15-storey, 27,000 sqm vertical Hub at Hassall Street to house a joint undergraduate engineering program alongside Western Sydney University’s architecture and business courses.

Complications in the project arose from the sewer running through the site and the necessity to develop a new multi level basement. A sewer deviation into Hassall Street was not available, and detailed designs were completed which included a sewer deviation within the site and the sewer to be suspended in the basement.

Project completed in 2021.
